Officially, this is known as SEO (Search Engine Optimization). We have read that the best techniques involve getting listed on directories such as Yahoo!. Supposedly getting listed on Yahoo! Directories will eventually result in being listed on Google via some sort of agreement between the companies. It may take several weeks or months, however.
